Lian Sek Lin

After graduating from Nanyang University, Mathematics Department in the early sixties, Mr. Lian was attached to River Valley High School as a mathematics teacher. In 1968, he was transferred to the headquarters of Ministry of Education as a specialist inspector for mathematics.  With his colleagues as co-authors, they wrote a series of mathematics text books entitled “New Mathematics for Secondary Schools” in the seventies. After his service in the HQ, he led several secondary schools as principal. Mr. Lian had great interest in music since his school days and participated in activities related to music actively. During his days in the teachers’ choir, he learned from the conductor, Mr. Goh Say Meng, the theories of music composing. In 1995, he was commissioned to compose the anthem for the Assumption University of Thailand. The anthem was further recorded by Bangkok Symphony Orchestra in CD. His music compositions which include art song, chorus, string ensemble and orchestral music are often heard in concerts. His string quintet “A Garden City” (also known as “A Green Meadow”) was performed at the concert “A Tribute to Singapore” in July 2015 as part of the celebrations of SG50.
